RENT-A-FAN BASE

Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."

RENT-A-FAN BASE

I was reading an article by Seth Godin concerning marketing and could not help but realize that what he was saying applies perfectly to the Music Industry. Specially, with regard to a Artist who choose to be signed to a Major Label deal as their ultimate goal.
To get straight to the point, one of the driving forces for Artist to seek out Major Label Deals is the belief that he/she/they will get national exposure. In looking at this belief, it is true that you will get exposure (if the Major Label decides to push your product for longer than 60 days), but let’s briefly analyze the quality of the exposure you will achieve and whether or not it will actually put money in your pocket. 2 Things stick out in my mind:

1. RENT-A-FANBASE: The possible Fanbase you are gaining through signing the Major Deal does not belong to you. The Major Label has a marketing machine that will supposedly get your product out to the masses. The problem, however, is that the Major Label’s cannot monopolize pushing product to the public the way they were able to do in the past. Today, the music buying public has multiple ways to find and purchase music that may have nothing to do with a Major Label’s involvement. However, the point I want to make in this Blog is that Renting a Fan Base is not going to work for you in the long run in my opinion. Basically, what is happening in the Rent-A-Fanbase approach is that the Major Label is using your music to do a quick flip (quick hustle money, which for you will not put money in your pocket – unless sales exceed expenses). See my other Blogs if you have further questions about this aspect. The other unfortunate aspect of RENT-A-FANBASE is the fact that in most cases, as soon as you lose the Major Deal, your FANBASE rental term is terminated and you are right back to square one.

2. OWN-A-FANBASE: The OWN-A-FANBASE approach represents a Fanbase that you have built yourself through your own blood, sweat and tears. This is a Fanbase that supports your music, movement or whatever, long before you were approached by a Major Label. In fact, with the Fanbase that you own, these individuals will support you whether or not a major Label signs you to a major deal. The OWN-A-FANBASE takes longer to build, but in my opinion and experience, you make more money owning a Fanbase, than renting a Fanbase.
